This is application of radioactive shielding material KALMATRON® KF-αβγ as an admixture to concrete mix combined with KALMATRON® KF-A for attenuation of radiation. This combination results in a concrete density up to 3,500 Kg/m3 with twice lower shrinkage and highest adhesion to concrete an stucco surfaces. The best for repair of old and building of new structures, restoration of material’s attenuation and suppressing of the sources of radioactive contamination.
APPLICATION OF KF-αβγ + KF-A AS A COATING
1. Prepare conventional concrete mix with 10 Kg/m3 of KF-A to provide features of High Performance Concrete for low shrinkage and
liquid impermeability.
2. Use testimonial dosages of KF-αβγ beginning from 30 Kg/m3; 50 Kg/m3; 75 Kg/m3 and 100 Kg/m3 to obtain complete attenuation of radiation.

KALMATRON® KF-αβγ ADMIXTURE
TO SHOTCRETE MIX FOR ATTENUATION OF RADIATION
■ DESCRIPTION
KALMATRON®KF-αβγ was developed for protection and deactivation of radioactively contaminated building structures. This invention is based on the phenomena studied by Dr. Rusinoff “The defect mass under decay of the solid cryogen”. A stream of particles, especially alpha or beta particles from a radioactive source or neutrons from a nuclear source, displaces weakly related atoms from the building materials. These displaced atoms are the reason for microscopic deteriorations and penetration into environment with long-term damage of biological cells.
When the atomic structure of a solid body is able to oscillate freely, any strike of a heavy particle doesn’t cause displacement of the weakly related atoms. The reason is relaxation of the particle’s striking energy by dissipation of the oscillator’s energy. That’s why our protective materials’ properties are low density and high attenuation of radiation. Below are the mix designs developed for two major shotcrete applications.
■SHIELDCRETE KF-αβγ is a shotcrete mix designed for applications on/into earth formed constructions as a self-carrying,
pre-reinforced, radiation-shielded, and waterproofed structure.
SHIELDCRETE KF-αβγ eliminates the need for wire mesh reinforcement and waterproofing arrangements.
■PLASTCRETE KF-αβγ is a shotcrete mix designed for applications on/into concrete/masonry structures as a protective
coating that provides radiation attenuation and gas and liquid impermeability, with the highest adhesion to applied structure.
PLASTCRETE KF-αβγ efficiently resists climate and chemical corrosions without standard protection.
■ RECOGNITION AND APPLICATION
- SHIELDCRETE KF-αβγ and PLASTCRETE KF-αβγ are applicable on soil, concrete and masonry surfaces exposed to sources of
primordial or industrial radiation.
- Highest resistance to liquid-gas permeability and chemical and organic corrosions at a thickness of only ¾ “or 19 mm.
- Required attenuation of radiation must be determined by comparative experimental measurements on the job site starting from a
thickness of application of 1” or 25mm.
- Provides stable adhesion to structures with minimum preparation before application. Applicable by shotcrete and cast in place
technologies with various fields of application.
■SURFACE PREPARATION
1. The surfaces should not be washed with water just before application. Washing of concrete should be done 24 hours prior to plaster application. The surface of concrete has to be naturally dried to avoid sliding of freshly applied concrete. The purpose of water washing is to remove dirt and dust deposits.
■MIX PREPARATION
2. Load the mixer by the standard technology. KALMATRON®KF-αβγ should be loaded in the dry stage. Therefore, do not dissolve KALMATRON®KF-αβγ with water before loading into the mixer.
3. Mix for 5 minutes or until creamy effect appears. If the mix is still stiff, it means that the dust content of the sand is very high and
5 Liters/m3 or 1.72 Gallon/ cu. yd. of water need to be added.
4. Do not apply water reducers and plasticizers. The attempt to improve pumpability by oily additives gives negative results especially
for radiation attenuation. That layer has no targeted density and adhesion, which results in radiation leaks and fallen hardened
material.
■APPLICATION
5. Applicable by any known technology with pumpability at 150 m or 500 feet.
6. A setting time accelerator on the end of the hose should be used on places where the leaks are.
7. Control the water to cement ratio at 0.38 to 0.39 to prevent sliding of fresh shotcrete layer.
■CURING
8. Spray water in 6 to 8 hours after application. In a very hot climate repeat water spray in 6 to 8 hours.
